Hockinson Middle School students spent part of Valentine’s Day making 40 blankets and donating them to Fire District 3 to distribute to people in need. It was a project of the school’s mentoring program in which seventh and eighth graders work with sixth graders to ease their transition into middle school.
Tuesday morning about 70 mentors, parents and sixth graders participated in the blanket-making project, with mentors training mentees in the art of blanket tying. The entire sixth grade class had raised money in a “Bucks for Blankets” fundraiser to purchase the materials.
The blanket-making service project is particularly special this year, because the tying event had to be cancelled four separate times due to winter weather. With it finally happening on Valentine’s Day, HMS teacher Kim Abegglen said she and her students dubbed the project “Show Our Community Some Love.”
