Innovative Literacy Projects Receive iQ Grants

Three Hockinson teachers have been awarded $500 Literacy Grants from iQ Credit Union. The money is intended to support innovative ways to celebrate and promote literacy among middle and high school students.

School counselor Jessica Ambrose plans to use her grant to start a lunchtime book club at Hockinson Middle School. The goal is to give students an opportunity to read and discuss books that deal with life skills and support the school’s character education program. “The books will also have something that students can relate to,” she wrote in her application.

Art teacher Tanya Hochhalter plans to increase her library of books about artists. “Having access to great literary resources is key to the interest of the students,” she wrote, adding that literary resources help her students at the High School retain information as well as conduct research for presentations.

Student support teacher Leslie Ruby will use her grant to establish a classroom library for the 18-21 Transition program. It will support student learning about employment options, leisure and recreational activities, personal interests and academics. “The library would allow students to learn the joy that reading for leisure can bring as well as how to seek out information within text to answer important questions,” she wrote.

Thank you, iQ Credit Union!
