This April, families across Hockinson made their voice heard in the 2023 HSD Communications Survey. This survey provides helpful insight for schools and the district in order to best serve Hockinson families. Families provided input on preferred communications methods and their perception of the accuracy, timeliness, transparency, trustworthiness and understandability of school and/or district communications.
The survey helps us to prioritize family preferences and set goals for the upcoming school year. Based on your feedback, we’re prioritizing electronic newsletters and social media more in future communications. We’re also hearing that Hockinson families want to see more communications about student opportunities. Hockinson School District plans to prioritize more information about student extracurricular activities, scholarships, internship opportunities, and events in the 2023-24 school year. Greatest Strength: Understandability
Based on the communications survey, we learned that Hockinson families view understandability as the greatest strength of school/district communications. The majority of Hockinson families (69.6%) rated school and/or district communication understandability as a 5 on a scale of 1 to 5.
Greatest Area of Improvement: Communicating Student Opportunities
We’re always looking to improve our communications. Out of 89 families, 44.6% rated school/district communications regarding student opportunities as 5 on a scale from 1 to 5. According to the survey, 55.4% of Hockinson families see room for improvement in school and district to communications about student opportunities.
Accuracy & Timeliness
According to this year’s survey, Hockinson families perceive school and district communications to be accurate and timely. On a scale of 1-5, the majority of families rated school and district communications accuracy as a 5/5 (67.9%.)
On a scale of 1-5, the majority of families (53.6%) rated school and district communications timeliness with the highest rating.
Transparency & Trustworthiness
Hockinson families indicated that school and district communications feel understandable and transparent. The below graph shows how families rated transparency of school and district communications, on a scale from 1 to 5.
The majority of families rated communications as trustworthy. Most respondent families (57.1%) rated school and district transparency as 5/5.
Methods of Communication
This survey helps our team to match our methods of communications with family preferences. According to this year’s survey, Hockinson families prefer electronic newsletter communications (94.6% of respondents) and social media (60.7% of respondents) over methods of communications like print newsletters and digital signs for non-emergency situations. For emergency communications, Hockinson families prefer automated text messages (96.4%) and automated phone calls (76.8%) over social media, the school website, or local media outlets.

Throughout the remainder of the school year and into the 2023-24 school year, families can expect to find information about their student’s school through electronic and print avenues. Hockinson School District publishes bimonthly electronic newsletters which are delivered to families via email. Three times per year, families will receive a printed newsletter with information about relevant school programs, successes, and events. District information can always be found on the Hockinson School District website. Hockinson School District is on social media including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Most of these communications are also available at the school level.
