HSD Schools Step Up Efforts to Keep Kids, Staff Healthy this Winter

Hand washing

Health officials expect an elevated cold-flu-COVID-RSV season this winter, so the HSD is taking steps to keep our staff and students healthy. The Revised DOH Guidance for K-12 Schools, updated Nov. 1, Mc recommends schools continue to employ enhanced ventilation protocols (eg, top-grade air filters and nightly indoor/outdoor air "purges") and disinfecting practices, which includes frequent cleaning of high-touch areas. It also advises schools to follow proper handwashing and respiratory etiquette, which includes:

  • Handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (60% minimum).

  • Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.

  • Throwing used tissues in the trash.

  • Coughing and sneezing into your elbow, not your hands, when you don’t have a tissue.

COVID-mitigation protocols will also remain in place this winter, specifically:

  • Protocols relating to symptomatic individuals - If symptomatic, stay at home and take a COVID test.

  • Protocols relating to individuals testing positive for COVID - Remain at home for 5 days following symptom onset. A negative test (after Day 5) is required to return to school/work.

  • Notifications of potential exposure - Our district will continue to send parent notifications to teachers and parents regarding possible classroom exposures.
