HHES team reaches for the … sun!

HHES Solar Solvers team displays their trophy

Congratulations to Hockinson Heights’ Solar Solvers—they received the “Solar Car All Star” award for elementary schools at the 2019 Solar Car Challenge!

The Solar Solvers are a team of three fifth-grade students—among 40 Hockinson fourth and fifth graders and 160 teams from Southwest Washington—competing in the event at Hudson Bay High School.

HHES’s teams have been meeting in an after-school club since January, learning how to design, build and race solar hybrid model cars.

On competition day, only one of the Solar Solvers was able to compete, so he represented his team alone.

“The judges were impressed with how he competed—interviewing, racing and repairing his car,” said solar car coach and HiCap specialist Hollie Rose.

HHES’s other solar car teacher-coaches include Julia Daigneault, Renee Fern and LuAnn McDonald.

The Solar Car Challenge is sponsored by Clark Public Utilities and held in partnership with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, WaferTech, Columbia Credit Union and CE.
