Schools on the Rise Graphic

Way to go, Hornets! Recipients of the 2026 Schools on the Rise Award were revealed at this year's Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP) Summer Conference in Spokane, WA and Hockinson Middle School was among the winners!

The Washington Schools on the Rise Award recognizes schools where students and adults work together to build an exceptional school culture, elevate student voice, and create meaningful opportunities for shared leadership. Your application reflected these values in outstanding ways.

In its commendation, the AWSP selection committee was "especially inspired by the intentional partnership between students and adults that is woven throughout your school. From your two leadership classes and student-led committees to restorative practices, student surveys, and an open-door philosophy, your school has created authentic opportunities for students to shape the direction of their school community." The committee went on to recognize how HMS students "helped to develop a representative student council structure, partnered with staff on campus improvement projects through the woodshop program, and collaborated to create experiences that strengthen a sense of belonging and school spirit."

The committee also pointed to the school's quantitative measurements, noting the school's "exceptional student survey results, high participation in clubs, athletics, leadership activities, and school events, and an overwhelmingly positive school climate demonstrate the power of student-adult collaboration. Your data shows that students feel safe, connected, and empowered, and that they truly see themselves as partners in creating the culture of Hockinson Middle School."

This is the second time that HMS has received this award. AWSP representatives will visit the school at some point this fall to present the award to HMS students and staff.
